Music Minute - What's in the Box

Singer-songwriter Liz Kennedy unwraps a refreshingly grown-up take on the holidays with “What’s In The Box,” a warm, witty Christmas song that trades picture-perfect seasonal sentiment for the wonderfully imperfect reality of family life. Set against a glowing Christmas tree and a house temporarily free of children, the playful story turns an unexpected gift, a blender, into an invitation for eggnog, bourbon, and a little well-earned holiday fun before the family comes racing back through the door. Blending humor, nostalgia, and the lived-in storytelling at the heart of Kennedy’s music, “What’s In The Box” captures a side of Christmas that parents rarely find wrapped beneath the tree: a few precious moments to themselves.

The official video for “What’s In The Box” is now available on Liz Kennedy’s official artist
YouTube channel and on all streaming platforms here, and is available for radio airplay via PlayMPE.

“I remember those Christmases when we were raising the kids so well. They were exciting and wonderful, but there was also so much chaos. You spend days decorating the house and trying to make Christmas special for everyone, and then suddenly you look around and, for one brief moment, everything is beautiful. You just want to enjoy it before the kids come home and turn it upside down again. A husband who understands that is priceless, especially one who can devise a plan to have the house to yourselves for a little while, enjoy some Christmas cheer and savor the calm before our darling destroyers return,” Kennedy said.

“What’s In The Box” brings Liz Kennedy together with an accomplished group of musicians rooted in Americana, folk, jazz and rock. Kennedy performs piano and lead vocals alongside Lorin Rowan of the Rowan Brothers, whose credits include Columbia and Warner/Asylum recordings and performances with Jerry Garcia, Willie Nelson and Levon Helm. Two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Mads Tolling contributes violin and viola, while Billy Johnson, a former drummer for Santana, handles drums and percussion. The recording also features Omega Brooks on background vocals, Joel Jaffe on nylon-string acoustic guitar, Marc Levine on upright bass, George Brooks on saxophone, and Hardy Hemphill on keyboards. Kennedy and Jaffe produced the track, with Jaffe also engineering and mixing. A veteran producer, engineer, and musician, Jaffe’s credits has credits with Ringo Starr, Mavis Staples, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, and Carlos Santana. “What’s In The Box” was recorded and mixed at Studio on the Hill in the United States.

About Liz Kennedy:
After going through a whirlwind of life changes, the San Francisco-based singer-songwriter, Liz Kennedy, has come to see songwriting not as a choice but as something she has to do. She says music sustains her and offers a way forward. Her decade-plus as a critically acclaimed recording artist has built her confidence in her ever-unfolding identity as a quirky, often humorous, and always insightful storyteller committed to honesty and to finding something unique to say. Kennedy describes herself as honest and observant, adding, “I sure hope I can easily laugh at myself.” Her songcraft – where the lyrics always follow the music – perfectly reflects that thoughtful self-assessment. The fascinating part of the process is not knowing just where the inspiration will come from. “It’s strange how emotional pain and joy can equally send you racing to the piano to capture something … whether it's a butterfly or a heavy brick.
